Planning for Erewash: Towards 2026

Housing Provision and Climate Change PDF Print E-mail

The Borough Council is seeking your views on issues regarding how we plan to meet Erewash’s housing requirements and also how we can plan positively to reduce the impacts of climate change at a local level.

Previous consultation on spatial planning issues affecting Erewash and Greater Nottingham took place back in February 2010. Draft proposals to address these were set out within the Aligned Core Strategy ‘Option for Consultation’.

Since then, the newly-elected Coalition Government’s intention to abolish Regional Strategies has seen the Borough Council, along with other authorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire; review the evidence which informed housing provision figures within the ‘Option for Consultation’ document.

Through this, the Borough Council has also been able to fully consider the Government’s latest Household Projections. These were released in November 2010 and are a key part of the overall evidence base for future housing provision numbers.

The review of evidence has led to Erewash Borough Council, alongside Broxtowe, Gedling and Nottingham City councils, to decide that housing figures set out in the ‘Option for Consultation’ continue to broadly be the appropriate ones to plan for. The councils have therefore collectively published a ‘Housing Provision Position Paper’ to present the review of the Government’s Household Projections and to set out the thinking on housing provision. A link to this paper and also a non-technical summary of its main findings can both be found at the bottom of this page.

Alongside publishing the Housing Provision Position Paper, the councils are also consulting on an amended policy on Climate Change as a result of the high level of interest the draft policy attracted in the ‘Option for Consultation’. The draft Climate Change policy is also available to view from a link at the bottom of the page.

There is now an opportunity to comment on the Housing Paper and take part in the consultation for the Climate Change policy. The Borough Council is particularly keen to hear views on the suitability of its proposed housing requirements to 2028. Stakeholders’ views are also being sought on the approach taken by Council in how it plans to reduce the level of carbon emissions in new developments through an amended climate change policy.

Consultation commences on Monday 25th July and finishes on 19th September 2011. Wherever possible, the Borough Council would appreciate responses to be made electronically using its interactive engagement module. This can be accessed at the following location:

 http://consult.erewash.gov.uk/portal/

Alternatively, responses can be made by email and these can be sent to ldf@erewash.gov.uk. You may also respond to us in writing and any comments should be sent to Planning Policy, Erewash Borough Council, Town Hall, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 1HU. If you are responding by email or in writing, the Council would greatly appreciate it if you used the consultation form which can be accessed at the bottom of this page. This will enable us to process all comments as quickly as possible.

The Housing Paper and Climate Change policy has also been made available to view at a range of locations around the Borough.

In addition to the Housing Provision Position Paper, you may also be interested in a consultation being undertaken within the neighbouring Derby Housing Market Area. This is considering both the scale of future housing need and also possible locations for growth away from the city’s current built-up area. With Erewash directly adjoining the eastern side of Derby, growth westwards could possibly impact upon the Borough.
