Planning for Erewash: Towards 2026

Sustainability Appraisal (incorporating SEA requirements) PDF Print E-mail

Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is a mandatory requirement under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. The purpose of SA is to promote sustainable development through the integration of social, environmental and economic considerations into the preparation of new or revised Development Plan Documents (DPD) and applicable Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD).

 Sustainability Appraisals should:

  • take a long term view of the expected social, economic and environmental effects of a proposed plan,
  • check that sustainability objectives are turned into sustainable planning policies,
  • reflect global, national, regional and local concerns and
  • form an integral part of all stages of plan preparation
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment

 Strategic Environmental Assessment

Local Planning Authorities must also conduct an environmental assessment in accordance with the requirements of European Directive 2001/42/EC "on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment" (the Strategic Environmental Assessment or 'SEA Directive')

While the requirement to carry out a Sustainability Appraisal and SEA are distinct, both can be satisfied in one single appraisal process. Erewash has followed this approach regarding the progression of the Aligned Core Strategies.
