Roll up the sleeves, grab your gloves, find the litter picking gadget  . . . Erewash is ‘Putting on the Blitz’ again next month.

Hundreds of local residents, schoolchildren and community groups have already signed up to take part in the 2010 Borough Blitz – the annual Erewash Borough Council crackdown on litter and graffiti.

The four-week blitz of all things grime is the flagship project of the Council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign and will run from Monday 1st March through to Sunday 28th March.

Groups of enthusiastic volunteers will be out and about across the borough – all wearing their fluorescent Pride in Erewash vests – and will be showing their community spirit by picking up litter, tidying up our streets and parks and scrubbing graffiti off walls and play areas.

Clean-ups have been arranged across Erewash and local people and organisations still have time to get involved and show their commitment to making the borough cleaner and greener.

Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, said:

“Our Borough Blitz has been an outstanding success over the last few years and the feelgood factor that it has generated continues to gather momentum as we prepare for the 2010 event.

“There are so many enthusiastic people of all ages who take pride in their community all year round and the Borough Blitz is a great platform for more people to get involved. Pride in Erewash is all about showing how working together can make a real difference to our communities.

“It’s all systems go for this year’s big clean-up – so spring into action this March and call us now to join in.”

As well as the community clean-ups, a Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire ‘roving’ clean-up team will target known litter hotspots for four days a week throughout the Blitz, while Police Community Support Officers will also be pitching in to help.

And the Probation Service continues its support for the initiative by bringing together willing teams to do their bit for the community by helping with graffiti removal and cleaning up known problem sites.
