Young people in Ilkeston will be able to take part in a whole range of fun and FREE activities when Erewash Borough Council and its partners launch the pioneering ‘Friday Night Vibe’ in the town this month.
The exciting seven-week project will be based at Rutland Sports Park and will be held every Friday night from 6pm-9pm from 12th February through to 26th March.
Aimed at youngsters aged from 12 to 19 years, the activities on offer will vary from week to week and will include street dancing, DJ’ing, clay pottery, a computer games area, various sports activities and a ‘Gamelan’ Indonesian music-making session.
The Council’s ever-popular climbing wall – the tallest mobile facility in the UK – will also be a big attraction over the seven weeks. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue will provide a variety of activities including a chance to experience a smoke tent, the use of breathing apparatus and a special assault course.
The launch of Friday Vibe in Ilkeston follows a successful pilot at Long Eaton’s West Park Leisure Centre last summer, when the scheme proved a big hit and attracted more than 600 people throughout the school holidays.
The Friday night project is supported by several partners and funded through the Erewash Positive Activities Group, which includes Erewash Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Erewash Community Safety Partnership, Derbyshire Police and voluntary organisations. The Council’s Sport and Health Development Team is co-ordinating the event and its activities.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said:
“Friday Vibe was an outstanding success in Long Eaton and we are delighted to be able to bring this exciting scheme to Ilkeston – it will be seven weeks of fantastic fun with loads of great activities for the young people of Ilkeston.
“Our thanks go to those other organisations that have helped provide this project – it is a great example of partnership working for the benefit of Erewash residents.”
