Erewash Borough Council will be making sure local dog owners aren’t caught short when it comes to disposing of their pet’s waste.
From 1st April this year, dog walkers will be able to use all of the Council-owned litter bins to dispose of their bagged dog waste. Residents are currently limited to using the 235 dog waste bins which are located across the borough.
The Council wanted to further improve its service in line with the needs of its residents and changes to the waste collection system means it is now able to deal with dog waste in all types of bin.
It is hoped this increase in the number of bins available will encourage more dog walkers to dispose of their pets’ waste in a safe and responsible manner and reduce the amount of dog mess on Erewash streets and open spaces.
Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, said:
“Dog mess on our streets and in our parks is a major concern for our residents and we share their anger at those people who fail to pick up after their pet. We need all dog owners to take a responsible approach to collecting and disposing of their pets’ waste.
“All our bins can be used from next month, something I’m sure that will be welcomed by residents – and something which we hope will help reduce the amount of dog waste on the streets.
“Although the majority of dog owners are responsible individuals, irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated. Additional facilities have been provided, so there is no excuse.”
Residents who wish to report dog fouling, fly tipping, littering, abandoned vehicles and graffiti can use the Council’s PRIDE Line, a 24-hour confidential hotline for the reporting of environmental crime on 0115 8508383.
