Major makeover for Market Place

Work gets underway this month to give Long Eaton Market Place an exciting new look as part of Erewash Borough Council's continued drive to breathe new life into the town centre.

The four month project is due to start on 21st June and will see the Market Place transformed into a real centre piece for the town, with the aim of giving new energy to the historic market area and opening up the site for community events.

British Yorkstone will be used as paving, while a simplified layout will see a feature lamp column at the centre and new seating, noticeboard and cycle racks.

A key design feature is the removal of 'clutter' to provide a welcoming and attractive new image that will be a great place for new events to be held for people of all ages, while it will also give a larger feel to Long Eaton Market - providing a positive boost to stallholders and opening up more space for new traders.

The environmental makeover is the latest phase of the Council's major Townscape Heritage Initiative, which, thanks to Lottery funding, has already seen work completed in the Lime Grove area.

Councillor Geoffrey Smith, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning, said:
“This is an important and exciting makeover for the Market Place area and is part of our on-going commitment to regenerating the town centre and putting the ‘feelgood factor’ back into Long Eaton.

“Once completed, it will re-establish the historic market area and will give better opportunities for our market traders – as well as providing more space to increase the size of the market. With a power supply also included, there will be great opportunities for special events for the community, with the idea of making this the ‘hub’ of the town centre.

“We appreciate that residents and traders will face disruption over the next few months but we can assure them that we will be doing all we can to keep this to a minimum. We have organised the work for the summer months so that we have longer working days and, hopefully, good weather, to enable this major work to be done in as short a time as possible.”

During the work, Long Eaton market will be relocated on to the High Street and the taxi rank to Beaconsfield Street car park.
