Fundraising residents and staff at Ilkeston’s Victoria Park Leisure Centre turned in a champion performance at this year’s Swimathon event – raising a bumper £10,308 for charity.
Because of this great effort, Victoria Park achieved the second highest money raising total in the Midlands area – a fantastic achievement for the residents and staff who work at and use the leisure centre.
Nearly 60 people took part in the three-day charity fundraising event back in April, the highest number since the centre began hosting the Swimathon events nearly a decade ago.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:
“All the sponsorship money has now been collected and we are thrilled that more than £10,000 has been raised thanks to the efforts and generosity of people in Erewash.
“Thanks to the money raised and the number of swimmers taking part, Victoria Park Leisure Centre also achieved a national ranking of 17 – a first class result when you consider just how many venues across the UK took part in the Swimathon challenge. Well done to all involved.”
Swimathon was launched nationally in 1986 and is the world’s biggest swimming fundraising event. Money raised goes to Marie Curie Cancer Care and a small portion to The Swimathon Foundation.
