The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Robert Parkinson, attended a special memorial service in Stanley Village at the weekend to remember the crew of a Wellington Bomber who died on active service when their plane crashed near the village in July 1942.

A short Service of Remembrance was led by Rev Simon White at the Memorial Plinth for the Wellington Bomber W5795 crew at St Andrew’s Church in Stanley Village on Saturday morning. (10th)

Councillor Parkinson gave the introduction to the service and said he was honoured to be attending the memorial:

“It is important that this brave crew, along with all those who have given their lives for this country, are remembered. Without these annual ceremonies, they could so easily be forgotten.

“As well as the crew of the Wellington Bomber, we remember the families and friends who waited so anxiously for their return.”

The names of the crew were read out during the service, which was attended by family members, including 95-year-old Mrs Freda Burton, widow of Pilot Officer Kenneth Radford. Wreaths and crosses were laid at the Memorial Plinth and the service included a one minute silence.
