Erewash showed off its flower power and blossomed to impress when the East Midlands in Bloom judges paid a visit earlier this month.

Erewash Borough Council hosted the judges and gave them a tour around the Long Eaton and Ilkeston areas as the borough bids for 2010 Bloom glory. Both towns have been entered in the Large Town category of the annual competition and the results are due to be announced in mid September.

East Midlands in Bloom is the regional competition of the prestigious Britain in Bloom campaign, which encourages local authorities to improve communities through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping.

Erewash Borough Council always signs up to the competition through its high-profile Pride in Erewash initiative – a year-round campaign which aims to clean up our environment and show that by working together we can all make a difference to our neighbourhoods.

During their tour of the borough this month, judges rated the two towns on several areas including the Council’s floral displays and the maintenance and care of its horticultural displays. Also judged was the attractiveness of permanent planting and landscaping, the general cleanliness of the towns and the amount of community and private sector involvement.
Councillor Barbara Harrison, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, said:

“Our parks and horticultural teams always work so hard to make our borough blossom and make summertime so bright and cheerful with their planting displays, baskets and commitment to making Erewash a nice and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.

“The judges have seen the results of all their hard work and we now have to wait to hear the results in September. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that both Long Eaton and Ilkeston will be celebrating some good news.”

Among the sites visited by the judges in Ilkeston were the Market Place, Victoria Park, Stanton Road Cemetery, Hallam Fields Junior School and White Lion Square. In Long Eaton the tour included visits to St Laurence’s Churchyard, the Library grounds, Wilsthorpe Road allotments, West Park, Longmoor Road Cemetery and to view the on-going Market Place Improvement project.
