Erewash residents are being urged to turn out in force and join in the fun of this month’s unmissable Summer Sporting Weekend at Long Eaton’s West Park Leisure Centre. (14th/15th)
But kicking off the two-day spectacular on Saturday (14th) is a fabulous One Mile Family Fun Run, which is open to people of all ages and which starts at 12noon. The Fun Run is limited to 100 entrants and registration opens on the day at the Leisure Centre at 10.30am on a first come, first served basis.
Saturday also sees the Erewash Junior Aquathlon event at West Park Leisure Centre, when youngsters aged from 8 to 14 years will take part in the afternoon swim and run event from 1pm.
Then Sunday morning will see the annual triathlon get underway, an event which has now become a landmark on the sporting calendar as nearly 400 competitors shape up to test their health and fitness in this popular sport.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:
“The whole weekend is a real colourful showpiece of sport, health and fitness for people of all ages and is a real summertime festival – so I hope local residents will turn out in force to support all those taking part.
“We are very proud of this annual event, which continues to grow and break records every year and perfectly demonstrates our commitment to encouraging more and more people to get involved in sport.”
The first triathletes are due in the pool at 7.30am and the event will be ongoing throughout Sunday morning as the 400 competitors complete the swimming, cycling and running disciplines - finishing at around 2-2.30pm on West Park when the final runners will be reaching the finishing line. Awards will be presented in the Leisure Centre Sports Hall afterwards.
- West Park Leisure Centre car park and the road from Wilsthorpe Island to the mini roundabout at the Leisure Centre will be closed from 7am-1pm on Sunday. Diversions will be in place.
