Bin there, done that!

A large, square-style litter bin which was removed from Long Eaton Market Place as part of the current makeover project has now been installed on Hawthorne Avenue in the town . . . 20 years after the local residents donated it to Erewash Borough Council!

It was in 1990 when the Hawthorne Residents’ Association provided the heavy duty, planter-style litter bin for Long Eaton Market Place, when the Council was leading a clean-up of the town centre and wanted to install new bins and seating.

So when the bin was removed a few weeks ago for the ongoing Market Place refurbishment, the Council was looking for a new ‘home’ for it – and there was clearly only one place it could possibly go!

Now Erewash Borough Council Leader, Councillor Chris Corbett, will celebrate the installation of the bin on the corner of Hawthorne Avenue and Tamworth Road with local residents Mr Terry Boaden and his wife Pauline on Monday 23rd August at 10.30am.  It was Mr and Mrs Boaden who bought the bin 20 years ago and donated it on behalf of the Residents’ Association.

Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says:

“We were looking to relocate and reuse the bins that we have removed, because the Market Place will have a complete new look. This particular bin has a plaque which proudly declares that it was donated by the Hawthorne Avenue Residents’ Association, so we thought it was absolutely right that we should install it in that area.

“It’s a lovely example of ‘recycling’ – we have re-painted and polished the bin and taken it back to the people who gave it to us. I know the local residents are delighted to see ‘their bin’ now installed on their doorstep to help in the campaign to keep Erewash tidy!”

Mr and Mrs Boaden, who still live in the Hawthorne Avenue area, say they funded the planter-style bin because they wanted to show community spirit in the drive to stop people dropping litter.

Adds Mr Boaden:

“When I heard about the new project to refurbish the Market Place, I contacted Councillor Corbett to see what was going to happen to ‘our’ bin. He was absolutely marvellous and we are really grateful that he helped ensure that it was returned to us. It was 20 years ago and the bin has certainly stood the test of time. It is still important to us that people use litter bins instead of dropping rubbish on our streets and in our town centres.”
