Erewash Borough Council is appealing to residents claiming Single Person Discount on Council Tax to provide updated information where the discount is no longer valid. Residents have a duty to promptly notify changes which affect liability; therefore they are urged to tell the Council before 30th September 2010 to avoid paying backdated amounts and a possible fine.
Council officers believe some of the 17,200 households in Erewash claiming Single Person Discount on their Council Tax bills may have experienced changed circumstances and may no longer be entitled to the discount. Checks will shortly be undertaken with private sector partners to identify these cases and then action will be taken to reclaim money underpaid and to consider appropriate measure.
If anyone requires their information about Single Person Discount updating they should contact the Council before the review starts on 30th September 2010.
Councillor David Stephenson, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Resources/Budget, says:
“The Council Tax Single Person Discount review is aimed at ensuring fairness to all residents who claim this discount legitimately. It is important that residents advise the Council of any changes to their current circumstances before 30th September to avoid possible fines and recovery of backdated payments due.”
