Schoolchildren, local residents and business representatives will all find out whose ‘green fingered’ gardening skills have scooped top honours when the Erewash in Bloom Awards 2010 are announced on Friday. (1st October)
The annual awards will be presented during an awards ceremony at the Pavilion Suite, Morley Hayes Golf Club – the glittering finale of this year’s competition, which once again attracted entries from people of all ages and from all corners of the borough.
The Bloom gardening contest is the flagship project of Erewash Borough Council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign and this year attracted 155 entries – up on previous years – and a record-breaking 16 schools also got involved in a range of categories.
The 2010 Bloom competition was backed by a new sponsor - the Erewash Valley Branch of the Oddfellows Friendly Society – and categories include Best School Project, Best Allotment Site, Best Pub, Restaurant and Hotel and Best Hanging Baskets. Residents have also competed for best front and rear gardens in small and large categories, while there has also been a fun Tallest Sunflower section for the under-16s.
The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Robert Parkinson, will present the awards, which will be announced by Dave Bramwell, Erewash Borough Council’s Head of Greenspace and Street Scene.
As well as the Bloom honours, a special presentation will be made to representatives of Long Eaton Horticultural Society and Ilkeston’s Friends of Stanton Road Cemetery group, which were both awarded certificates in the recent East Midlands in Bloom Competition.
